L 2 CONC . Sloan, founder, and up to the close of his life, editor of the Salt L 2 CONC ake "Herald". The creation of this influential journal, which still li 2 CONC ves, and bids fair to live through the changes of the future, as it has s 2 CONC urvived the vicissitudes of the past, was not Mr. Sloan's initial work, b 2 CONC ut his crowning achievement in the field of newspaper enterprise. He h 2 CONC ad been connected successively with the "Millennial Star" at Liverpool, w 2 CONC ith the "Deseret News" and "Daily Telegraph" at Salt Lake City, and had o 2 CONC riginated various publications, prior to the establishment of the Heral 2 CONC d. He was a natural journalist, and very much of a poet. In early year 2 CONC s, before leaving his native Erin, he printed a volume of verse, and su 2 CONC bsequently was the author of poems, hymns, essays and dramas. The peri 2 CONC od of his life in Utah was comparatively brief -- only eleven years-- b 2 CONC ut he left an enduring impress on his time, and died lamented by the wh 2 CONC ole community. 2 CONT 2 CONT The town of Bangor, County Down, Ireland was his birthplace, and the da 2 CONC te of his nativity November 9, 1830. His parents, John and Mary Sloan, w 2 CONC ere not wealthy, nor were they as poor as many around them. Moderate c 2 CONC ircumstances is a phrase that best describes their earthly lot. Edward r 2 CONC eceived a common school training, which, ended at the age of twelve. Th 2 CONC en he began to learn the trade of a weaver. While at the loom he studi 2 CONC ed Latin, under the tutelage of an aged minister of his neighborhood, a 2 CONC nd otherwise stored his capacious and retentive mind with the knowledge t 2 CONC hat qualified him for his chosen profession. 2 CONT 2 CONT A voracious reader, his devoured book after book of history, poetry, th 2 CONC eology, etc., and his quick apprehension and thorough assimilation mast 2 CONC er any subject that interested him. So vivid was the mental imprint, t 2 CONC hat in mature years he could repeat, word for word, without the slighte 2 CONC st hesitation, long poems, and orations, unconned by him since committi 2 CONC ng them to memory in his childhood. 2 CONT 2 CONT He was in his "teens" when he first heard of Mormonism -- introduced in 2 CONC to Ireland as early as July, 1840, by John Taylor, one of the Twelve Ap 2 CONC ostles, and afterwards preached there by various Elders. Who it was th 2 CONC at brought young Sloan into the Church we are unaware. He appears to h 2 CONC ave embraced the faith of his own volition, his parents remaining outsi 2 CONC de the fold. He was an Elder at eighteen, and labored as a missionary, f 2 CONC irst in Ireland, and then in England, Scotland and Wales. His poetic t 2 CONC emperament was evidenced at an early age, and at twenty he 2 CONT published a collection of his poems in a little volume entitled, "The B 2 CONC ard's Offering", under the patronage of Hon. W.S. Crawford, at Belfast. 2 CONC 2 CONT 2 CONT Prose and verse contributions from his pen also began to appear in the c 2 CONC olumns of the "Millennial Star," the organ of the Church in Europe. In E 2 CONC ngland, after experience as a Traveling Elder, he presided over the Not 2 CONC tingham Conference, and later over the Sheffield and Liverpool Conferen 2 CONC ces, his writings for the "Star" brought him to the notice of Edward W 2 CONC . Tullidge, the assistant editor of that paper, under President George Q 2 CONC . Cannon. This was early in the "1860's." Mr. Tullidge, a gifted writ 2 CONC er himself, encouraged the young writer, and on leaving England for Uta 2 CONC h, recommended him to President Cannon as his successor. The appointme 2 CONC nt was duly made, and Elder Sloan was installed as assistant editor of t 2 CONC he "Star." His labors as a religious writer were interspersed with con 2 CONC tinued service as a preacher of the Gospel, which found in him an able 2 CONC , fluent and zealous defender. His own turn came to emigrate in 1863. H 2 CONC e sailed from Liverpool on the "Amazon" on the second day of June, land 2 CONC ing at New York, and proceeding thence to Florence, Nebraska, from whic 2 CONC h point he crossed the plains in his own ox team outfit, by the usual r 2 CONC oute. His family came with him, for he was a married man, and had been s 2 CONC ince 1851, when he wedded Miss Mary Wallace, like himself a native of t 2 CONC he Emerald Isle, They arrived in Salt Lake City on the third day of Oct 2 CONC ober, four months and one day after leaving England. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Sloans settled permanently at Salt lake City. The head of the fami 2 CONC ly found immediate employment in the office of President Brigham Young, a 2 CONC nd from there went to the Salt Lake Theatre as bookkeeper. He was next e 2 CONC ngaged as assistant editor of the "Deseret News," and later became edit 2 CONC or of the "Telegraph," . . . In 1869 he published the Salt Lake City Di 2 CONC rectory, the first work of its kind ever issued in Utah. On the 5th of J 2 CONC une, 1870, Edward L. Sloan, then associated with William C. Dunbar, beg 2 CONC an the publication of the Salt Lake Herald, the former being editor, an 2 CONC d the latter business manager. The "Herald" came into existence as an i 2 CONC ndependent paper, the successor of the "Daily Telegraph," suspended. F 2 CONC rom the first, it was a stout antagonist of the Salt lake Tribune, whic 2 CONC h was bitterly anti-Mormon in spirit. Upon the many abuses of that per 2 CONC iod - the reign of carpet-bag rule in Utah - the fearless editor laid a s 2 CONC cathing and unsparing hand, and many a despotic official, or other memb 2 CONC er of the "ring," winced and cowered under the cutting lash of the Hera 2 CONC ld's brainy scribe. One of the "ringites," Major Offley by name, attem 2 CONC pted to assassinate the journalist in his office, presenting a pistol a 2 CONC t his breast and demanding the 2 CONT retraction of an article reflecting upon his character and course. Mr. S 2 CONC loan seized the weapon, turning it aside, and the timely arrival of his a 2 CONC ssociate, Mr. Caine, brought about Offley's arrest and subsequent punis 2 CONC hment in Judge McKean's court. A sample of Mr. Sloan's wit and ready re 2 CONC partee is furnished in the following incident of those stirring times, d 2 CONC uring which the Mormon leaders, the most eminent men in the community, w 2 CONC ere continually harassed by vexatious prosecutions. General Daniel H. W 2 CONC ells, the venerable Mayor of Salt Lake City, and one of the First Presi 2 CONC dency of the Church, had been indicted on a trumped up charge of murder 2 CONC , and was about to be arraigned before Chief Justice McKean; Mr. Baskin b 2 CONC eing the public prosecutor. An anti-Mormon paper referred sneeringly t 2 CONC o the defendant, stating that he was the man who impersonated Christ in t 2 CONC he Endowment House ritual, and asking ironically, "When will Christ be c 2 CONC rucified?" The Herald's retort was instant, "On Monday," said editor S 2 CONC loan, "Between Baskin and McKean." While discharging his editorial duti 2 CONC es, he employed his leisure - if an editor may be said to have any - in w 2 CONC riting for the stage. He composed several dramas, one of them an India 2 CONC n legend, "The Lily of the Seminoles," first presented at the Salt Lake T 2 CONC heatre. As a public speaker his services were much in demand, and as s 2 CONC ecretary or reporter of important meetings - for he was an expert steno 2 CONC grapher - his rapid pen was constantly in requisition. Of Genial temper 2 CONC ament and ever ready wit, with a perennial fund of sparkling anecdote, h 2 CONC e was the life and light of every company that included him. Among the j 2 CONC ournalistic enterprises fostered by him, mention must be made of the "W 2 CONC oman's Exponent," founded in June, 1872. Miss Lula Greene was the edito 2 CONC r of the paper, but Edward L. Sloan was it projector, and rendered valu 2 CONC able assistance in putting it upon its feet . . . During the last year o 2 CONC f his life he published another directory, this time of Salt Lake City a 2 CONC nd the Territory of Utah. 2 CONT 2 CONT Edward L. Sloan was the husband and father of three families. His firs 2 CONC t wife was Mary Wallace. She was a kind-hearted, motherly soul, with t 2 CONC rue Irish hospitality. She survived her husband about ten years. His o 2 CONC ther wives were Phebe Watts and Emma Jones. He had fifteen children. C 2 CONC hildren that lived were: Robert W. Sloan, Edward L. Sloan, Maggie Sloa 2 CONC n, Lula W. Sloan, Thomas W. Sloan and Walter J. Sloan. Deceased at a y 2 CONC oung age were four daughters and five sons. Though variously gifted Mr. S 2 CONC loan's element was undoubtedly journalism. 2 CONT Among all the newspaper writers of his period, throughout the West, non 2 CONC e eclipsed him and few could be deemed his equal. He wrote with the da 2 CONC sh and daring of a cavalry charge, the first of his wit, amid the satir 2 CONC e and pathos of his more serious writing, being comparable to the flash o 2 CONC f a sabre stroke or fierce roar of musketry, as the indomitable trooper w 2 CONC ith resistless might bears down upon the foe. He was feared, but also a 2 CONC dmired and respected, even by those whom duty and conviction compelled h 2 CONC im to differ with, and at times severely criticize. His death 2 CONT on August 2, 1874 , at the comparatively early age of forty four, left a p 2 CONC lace, not only at his own hearthstone, but in the community at large, d 2 CONC ifficult and even impossible to fill. (From "History of Utah" - pgs 62 2 CONC 3-524). 2 CONT 2 CONT A Phonetic Society was organized in Salt Lake City in the summer of 186 2 CONC 7, with Edward L. Sloan as president, and Alexander McRae, David W. Eva 2 CONC ns, and George A. Burgon as vice presidents. The objects of the societ 2 CONC y were to extend a knowledge of phonetics and to obtain a uniform syste 2 CONC m of writing phonography throughout Utah. To this end the members had a 2 CONC greed to adopt a uniform system as soon as the books they had ordered f 2 CONC rom the East arrived so that they could tell what the system would be. 1 SOUR @S6@ 2 NOTE Edward Sloan, age 39, male, white; Editor; Real Estate Value $1,500; Pe 3 CONC rsonal Property Value $250; born in Ireland; Mother and Father foreign b 3 CONC orn; male citizen of U.S of 21 years and upwards 3 CONT Mary Sloan, age 35, female, white; keeping house; born Ireland; mother a 3 CONC nd father foreign born 3 CONT Robert Sloan, age 14; male, white; office boy; born Ireland; father and m 3 CONC other foreign born; attended school within last year 3 CONT Elizabeth Sloan, age 10, female, white; at school; born England; mother a 3 CONC nd father foreign born; attended school within last year 3 CONT Margaret Sloan, age 8, female, white; at school; born England; mother a 3 CONC nd father foreign born 3 CONT Edward Sloan, age 6, male, white; At school; born Utah; mother and fath 3 CONC er foreign born; attended school within last year 3 CONT John Sloan, age 4; male, white; At Home; born Utah; mother and father f 3 CONC oreign born 3 CONT Source Information: 3 CONT Enumerated on 20 June 1870 3 CONT 20th Ward, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Territory 3 CONT Page #6 1 SOUR @S7@ 2 NOTE The following is a list of the only SLOAN's found in the 1901 Census as i 3 CONC temized above: 3 CONT Anthony Sloan, head, presbyterian, can read and write, male, age 34, ca 3 CONC re driver, married, born Down 3 CONT Lizzine Sloan, wife, presbyterian, can read and write, female, age 24, m 3 CONC arried, born Down 3 CONT William Sloan, son, presbyterian, cannot read and write, age 4, male, n 3 CONC ot married, born Down 3 CONT Lela Sloan, daughter, presbyterian, cannot read and write, age 2, femal 3 CONC e, not married, born Down 3 CONT 3 CONT Hugh Doriam, head, presbyterian, can read and write, age 36, male, labo 3 CONC reur, married, born Down 3 CONT Lizzie Doriam, wife, presbyterian, can read and write, age 36, female, m 3 CONC arried, born Down 3 CONT Sarah Sloan, relative, presbyterian, can read and write, age 8, female, n 3 CONC ot married, born Bangor, Down. 3 CONT 3 CONT 1901 Census/Conglig 3 CONT Homes: Unhabited 2; Inhabited Dwelling Houses 61 3 CONT Families: 61; Male 101; Female 128; total # of persons 229 3 CONT Religious Profession: 3 CONT Catholic -- 0 3 CONT Church of Ireland -- 15 male; 20 female 3 CONT Other -- 13 male; 3 female 3 CONT Presbyterians -- 73 male; 105 female 3 CONT Description of House for Anthony Sloan: 3 CONT No. 32 Built -- Private Dwelling; Ihnabited 3 CONT Walls 0[=mud or wood] 3 CONT Roof 0[=thatch or wood 3 CONT Rooms 2[=2, 3, or 4 rooms] 3 CONT Windows in Front of House 2; Total for house 4 3 CONT Class of House -- 3rd 3 CONT Rooms Occupied -- 3 3 CONT Total # of Persons = 4 3 CONT Data Collected 20 April 1901 1 SOUR @S1@ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 9 NOV 1830 2 PLAC Conlig, Down, Ireland 1 DEAT 2 DATE 2 AUG 1874 2 PLAC Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, USA 2 SOUR @S4@ 3 PAGE 3 August 1874 3 NOTE "OBITUARY" DEAD. 4 CONT It is our painful duty to record today, the sudden and unexpected demis 4 CONC e, at his residence in the 20th Ward, at twenty minutes to 12 o'clock l 4 CONC ast night, of Edward Lennox Sloan, Esq., late editor and part proprieto 4 CONC r of the Salt Lake Daily Herald, a man widely known in Great Britain an 4 CONC d Ireland, and in this Territory, from his extended labors in the minis 4 CONC try in years gone by and also on account of his great liberary abilitie 4 CONC s. 4 CONT Elder Sloan was born at Conlig, County Down, Ireland, November 9th 1830 a 4 CONC nd was 43 years, 9 months and 23 days old when he died. He obeyed the G 4 CONC ospel as taught by the Elders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-d 4 CONC ay Saints in his native place, and was shortly afterwards ordained to t 4 CONC he ministry, and sent to proclaim the principles of lie and salvation, w 4 CONC hich he had obeyed, to his countrymen. He also labored subsequently in t 4 CONC he same capacity in England and Scotland, and for a time presided over t 4 CONC he Sheffield Conference. For several years before he left Great Britai 4 CONC n he labored in the office of the Millennnial Star, at Liverpool. He e 4 CONC migrated to Utah eleven years ago. On his arrival he was for some time e 4 CONC ngaged at the Box Office at the Theatre. He was afterwards assistant e 4 CONC ditor of the Deseret News, and subsequently held a similar position on t 4 CONC he Daily Telegraph. About four years ago he and Mr. W. C. Its many dashing and sprightly articles from his pen furnis 4 CONC hing proof of his great ability as a journalist. Mr. Sloan was also t 4 CONC he sole author of two excellent Directories of Salt Lake City and neigh 4 CONC borhood, of several dramatic productions, and of numbers of poems, some o 4 CONC f which gave evidence that their author was the possessor of genuine po 4 CONC etic genius. As a journalist we think he had few equals, and certainly n 4 CONC o superior, in many respects, in the whole of this western country, and h 4 CONC is demise will cause a vacuum on the staff of the Herald that will be d 4 CONC eeply regretted, and extremely difficult to fill. 4 CONT His death was caused by congestion of the brain, and was no doubt super 4 CONC induced in part by long and excessive mental labor. Mr. Sloan we belie 4 CONC ve, was in his usual health on Saturday, but last evening he was seized w 4 CONC ith alarming symptons, which terminated fatally. Two or three weeks si 4 CONC nce Mrs. Sloan buried her eldest daughter, and now, in the dispensation o 4 CONC f Providence she is called to endure one of the greatest sorrows known t 4 CONC o humanity. Jan 23--There was a breezy time in the District court this a 3 CONC fternoon when argument on motion for temporary alimony, suit money and a 3 CONC ttorney fees came up in the Parkinson divorce case. 3 CONT Mrs. Parkinson filed affidavits sometime ago stating that her husband's i 3 CONC ncome was $300 per month, and asking that she be granted $250 attorney f 3 CONC ees, $100 suit money and $100 temporary alimony. 3 CONT Today defendant submitted a counter affidavit, in which he puts his ear 3 CONC nings at $200 per month, and also states that he owes $286, and that ei 3 CONC ghteen persons depending on him for living, therefore he could not pay a 3 CONC limony or attorney's fees. 3 CONT L. R. Rogers, one of Mrs. Parkinson's attorney, put defendant on the st 3 CONC and in cross-examination. He drew out from him that he has two wives o 3 CONC ther than his legal spouse, and maintains still another family, that of h 3 CONC is first wife, whom he divorced just before marrying the present one; t 3 CONC hat he has a numerous progeny, two or three of whom had attained majori 3 CONC ty and five of whom have been born since the Legislature legitimatised p 3 CONC olygamous children. 3 CONT When Rogers had succeeded in getting this information from the doctor h 3 CONC e proceeded in his argument to last him unmercifully. 3 CONT "You shameless creature," he said to the defendant, "you tarnish a woma 3 CONC n's character with the vilest calumny that could be written, and that w 3 CONC oman the mother of your babes. Parkinson, one of our best c 3 CONC itizens, is made the victim of vile attack, by L. R. Rogers, of Salt La 3 CONC ke City, attorney for Mrs. Parkinson in the pending divorce case. The T 3 CONC ribune, with its characteristic disregard for fair play when a Latter-d 3 CONC ay Saint is concerned has exaggerated and distorter the already unfair r 3 CONC emarks of Dr. Parkinson as a "shameless creature," simply because of hi 3 CONC s laudable desires to protect his honor and save his children from dang 3 CONC er worse than death. The facts of the case are simply these: Mrs. Mag 3 CONC gie Parkinson has been a confirmed opium fiend for the past seven years 3 CONC . At great expense and trouble she has been relieved of the habit six d 3 CONC ifferent times only to return to it. She has obtained the drug by ever 3 CONC y means possible, and her persistence in this course threatens her husb 3 CONC and with ruin in finances and honor. Her frequent appearances on the s 3 CONC treet in an intoxicated condition is another cause of chagrin and humil 3 CONC iation to him. All this might be endured if she were not persisting in g 3 CONC iving the deadly drug to her children, and rearing them under its influ 3 CONC ence. But when this developed, forbearance ceased to be a virtue, and D 3 CONC r. Parkinson was justified in applying for a divorce. 3 CONT As to the charges made against her in the divorce case, they were frame 3 CONC d by the attorney and although they were substantial and true, they wer 3 CONC e a little more severe than her husband could have wished. As to the c 3 CONC haracter of Dr. Parkinson, it needs no vindication, ad he has supported h 3 CONC is families up to the present date; but he has no money to pay in exorb 3 CONC itant attorney's fees. He was and is willing to settle honorably and a 3 CONC micably with the unfortunate woman but the other demands made upon him a 3 CONC re just as honorable before God and man, and he is determined to meet t 3 CONC hem in preference to dividing his earnings with the bombastic Rogers, w 3 CONC ho is endeavoring to please the brother to Mrs. Parkinson. I honor Dr. P 3 CONC arkinson for his devotion to his families, in dividing his income among t 3 CONC hem, and protecting them from want. Instead of turning them into the s 3 CONC treets, as some people would like to have him do. 3 CONT As to the remainder of the Tribune article, it needs no refutation; the t 3 CONC rue facts are known to Dr. Parkinson's friends and Attorney Rogers has n 3 CONC ot benefited himself by this attack.
